What on Earth is a Fortnite Backpack?!

Now I realize how old I am…

Earlier in the week, I saw a young man (teenager) wearing this very backpack. The bold Blue color caught my eye in the first place and when I gave it a second glance I saw the Yellow writing.

“Fortnite?” I asked myself – “What on earth is Fortnite…?”

When I got home I decided to do a quick google search to find out more about this “word” I’d just seen. I now wish I hadn’t bothered – I feel terribly old and out of touch with popular culture.

So, to make myself feel considerably better, I thought I’d look into this and learn more about it in case I ended up in a social situation where I was made to look even more foolish when the topic of conversation turns to video games. To help me commit it to memory, I thought it best to write this blog post. Hopefully, someone, somewhere out there on the internet will thank me for this one day!

Starting at the very beginning – What is Fortnite?

If you have no idea what this is, basically, Fortnite is a third person shooting video game for games consoles.

When you play on own (story mode) you play as a survivor in the zombie apocalypse where you need to build stuff and gather stuff alongside other players. What most people say is the main attraction of the game is the ability to be creative and build things (ladders and forts seem to be the most popular) in line with your own imagination.

You can also spend huge amounts of time simply shooting zombies until your heart’s content with an array of different weapons – and yes, you can collect backpacks too – check out this article (a Forbes of all places) to find out how these work. The stylizing of the game is very animated and so with everything looking slightly goofy and colorful, it’s not all blood and guts like one of those old Schwarzenegger movies.

Why is this game such a big deal now?

When it first started, Fortnite had a 4-person team game called Save the World which basically entailed building shelter and killing as many zombies as possible. But that was nothing, so it would seem.

When a new free download called Battle Royale came out, this game seems to have gone into overdrive – it certainly explains why I can hear my neighbor’s 13-year old son screaming and shouting at his TV at the top of his voice.

Battle Royale features a 100 player Deathmatch (meaning, 100 other real people) where you can play either as a team or in solo mode. The objective of the game is to be the last man (or woman) standing. As you progress towards the goal, the game zone contracts.

One of the crazy features, that seems to be very popular with this mode of the game is the ability to buy add-ons for the game with real money. This is usually things like clothes and Emotes – these are basic things like victory dances and other silly moves.

What I was really shocked to learn was that as of mid-2018, there were 45 million active players – A scary number! This probably explains why there are 20 pages of Fortnite Backpacks over at Amazon right now.

One of the standout, crazy phenomenon of Fortnite is the media attention it gets on the internet. The Pro Gamer known as Ninja (real name Tyler Blevins) earns $500,000 a month streaming his gaming session of him playing!

I hope that you’ve found my middle-aged ramblings useful (or maybe even amusing). Don’t forget that there are plenty more articles across the site that do (sometimes!) cater for the younger generation like me recent reviews of my favorite Fjällräven Kanken and Herschel Backpacks
