My last post of 2018. What’s the deal with Chrome Backpacks?
Chrome Backpacks, manufactured by Chrome Industries in the USA, are a brand of backpack that’s not really been on my radar in 2018. This is no longer the case! Having seen one of these up-front in the flesh over Xmas (the Urban Rolltop), I must say that I’m a huge fan and thought I just had to put this article together as my last article of this year.
Why is this Chrome brand popular?
These backpacks are hugely popular with cyclists and those who have an outdoor commute to work or college. The reason? A combination of a lifetime guarantee and military grade build something that the company deserves great credit for; maintaining the attention to construction in just the same way that the founders did 20 years ago. As a result, if you’re looking for an accessory that’s genuinely made of industrial-grade materials, you can’t go far wrong with this brand.
The Chrome Urban Rolltop Backpack
This first backpack is of a lightweight knurled design construction, with the upgraded urban ex 28 providing 10 liters of storage room plus a lot of brand new features to create a super versatile product.
Key features include a watertight, fast entry compartment for your phone, keys and wallet along with much more internal capacity via pockets to keep all squared off even if you’re hitting it hard on the daily commute. Working with cyclists of all shapes and sizes, Chrome managed to improve the shoulder harness layout to be much more comfortable and flexible compared to on any bag they’ve made before. Here really is the toughest, most resilient bag you will ever own.
The best feature for me is the fantastic rolltop lid that gives you both a great sense of knowing the lid is properly sealing off any wet weather, but also adding that extra layer of security to whatever you put in the main compartment.

The Chrome Bravo 2.0 Backpack
If it’s a larger backpack you’re interested in, something that’s loaded with features, then the Bravo 2.0 needs your attention.
With a generous main compartment, the front flap neatly hides away a location for your notebook, pens, plus your bits and pieces. There’s so much space in this front pouch that you can, if you so wish, reserve the main pocket for putting a change of clothes in, a very neat idea if you’re one of those cycling commuters.
In terms of being able to offer protection and storage for your technology, this backpack has two options for housing your laptop. The first is via the inner sleeve (waterproof) and also an outer (also watertight) option with a covering flap.

A superbly versatile backpack, the Bravo is made of 1000D Cordura Nylon and comes in two sizes – choose from either a 20 or 32 litre version. As standard, this is a 100% waterproof backpack thanks to its military grade, tuck-tarpaulin interior lining. A great all-round backpack, measurements are 22x13x3 inches. |
The Chrome Barrage Cargo Backpack
Finally, and by no means least, we’ve got the Barrage cargo backpack, the product that I think is somewhere in between the first two in terms of features and due to this clear flexibility, my overall favorite chrome backpack.
The Barrage is a watertight backpack with fully welded seams, and one demanding rolltop using an abrasion resistant Cordura outer shell. Its low-profile layout and side compression straps offer load functionality and enhanced visibility, while the outside cargo net keeps your equipment close and protected.
The main compartment extends from 22L to a massive 34L which leans that the Barrage will accommodate whatever you will need. Constructed from military grade specifications and materials (like all Chrome backpacks) the Barrage comes with a lifetime guarantee.
Another one of the outstanding features of this backpack is the ergonomic shoulder straps, complemented by the foam back panel for better comfort and breathability.
When it comes to storage options, this backpack isn’t found wanting. Easy access side pockets are there for your water bottles and the inside sleeve pocket fits 15-inch laptop with ease.
